What would Unity Days be without weather issues? Friday, early morning rain kept people out of the park, but didn't stop the festivities from beginning. The day began honoring the newest members of the Gold Residents - those individuals who have lived in Mayfield Heights for 50+ years. Lunch was served and memories were shared. Friday night the rides began, as well as the bocce tournament. Two bands performed to a rain soaked crowd; Velvet Shake at the main tent and Acoustic Jukebox at the bocce courts. Both were well received by the crowds.
Saturday was a 180 degree turnaround from Friday's weather. With beautiful skies the crowds came and explored the rides, inflatables, and games. They were wowed by Dr. U R Awesome and the Rockin' Robots; and they danced to tunes from Big In Japan all they way until fireworks. Those who stayed stated these were the best fireworks that we've had in quite some time.
Sunday saw the weather cooperate again. The parade route was shortened this year, but that didn't mean it was less spectacular. Starting with Parade Marshal Coach Sam Rutigliano until the last unit to get back to Golden Gate Shopping Center, the parade provided music, waves and of course lots of candy. Back in the park, the bocce tournament was coming to a conclusion, while the Polka Pirates were jamming away in the main tent. Jungle Terry's animals attracted their typical large crowd. Lines were long for the inflatables, balloon twister, and caricaturist artist. The night and weekend was capped off with the Citizen of the Year presentation to Dave and Cecelia Paponetti, and the big raffle winner announcements.
The City of Mayfield Heights Parks and Recreation thanks everyone for coming and we will get to work on bringing a great Unity Days to you again in the future!
