Chardon Polka Band

Unity Days Concert
Sunday June 24, 2018 - Main Tent
3:30 - 6:30 PM

What happens when teenage accordion players aren't allowed in marching band? They start a polka band. That's the story of Jake Kouwe. Teens Dan O'brien, Dan Sutts, Paul Coates, Mike Lewis, Cody Garret, and Jake Kouwe launched "The Chardon High School Polka Band" almost nine years ago in Chardon High School. Long hair, torn up jeans, chuck taylors, and a blue mohawk are probably the last traits people expect to see on members of a polka band, but such things were commonplace in "The Chardon High School Polka Band". This off-the-wall teenage polka band quickly made a name for themselves playing for their peers and local nursing home residents. The group expanded quickly and started booked jobs at various venues and events across northeast Ohio. Today, the band continues. There's been a lot of change in nine years, in the member line- up and other areas. The bands chief goal however, rocking your socks off with polka music, remains the same. From their humble beginnings as high schoolers going against the grain playing polkas instead of punk rock, the Chardon Polka Band has evolved into one of Northeast Ohio's most recognizable acts. The band continues to redefine and breathe new life into the genre as they spread their own form of polka.
